Latest LAME release: v3.100 (October 2017) LAME development started around mid-1998. Mike Cheng started it as a patch against the 8hz-MP3 encoder sources. After some quality concerns raised by others, he decided to start from scratch based on the dist10 sources. His goal was only to speed up the dist10 sources, and leave its quality untouched.

The most commonly occurring error messages are:
- The program can't start because libmp3lame-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
- There was a problem starting libmp3lame-0.dll. The specified module could not be found.
- Error loading libmp3lame-0.dll. The specified module could not be found.
- The code execution cannot proceed because libmp3lame-0.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
- libmp3lame-0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vender for support.
In the vast majority of cases, the solution is to properly reinstall libmp3lame-0.dll on your PC, to the Windows system folder. Alternatively, some programs, notably PC games, require that the DLL file is placed in the game/application installation folder.

The Audacity(r) QA Team suggests users download the ZIP version instead of the .EXE or .DMG (for Mac) versions. If you use the installers, and Audacity does not detect LAME, download the ZIP option, extract the files inside to a well known folder, thenopen Audacity, go to Library Preferences and configure it to search on the well known folder you extracted the files to.
